Solid state storage now running at a pound a Gig

2011-11-08

Just marking the moment really - a cursory browse around UK computer components sites suggests that a 500Gb hard drive is just about available for the same number of pounds. eBuyer.com, for example, is stocking a Crucial 500Gb drive for £550 quid. At the smaller end of the scale, a generic 16Gb Class 10 Micro-SD card from MyMemory is currently costing £16. Sure, you can pay more and there's a load more factors than storage size, but it does look like quite a watershed moment.

If you're wondering what to put your 2.5" SSDs into, here's a suitable NAS enclosure from Synology - the DS411slim. And meanwhile, another interesting product from Maplin - a 4-slot SD Card RAID controller. One day all storage will be like this :)
