The downside of open communities?

What fun. Several current blog roads lead to this post, one man's rant against being contacted by PR agencies just because his blog is seen as influential. Leaves me a bit flummoxed, not so much from the "what did you expect, when you're famous" angle, but more from the whole nature of Internet-based social activities. Fact is, if you want to swim with the fishes, you're also going to be in with the sharks, octopuses (octopi?) and plankton. To suggest things are otherwise is fundamentally missing the point of open communities.
