Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel

I lay there awake, my mind was refusing
To leave go of things it could not understand
The clock spent eternities counting the seconds
My thoughts went in circles, followed the hands
As they grudgingly signalled the minutes go by

Too many thoughts and too many questions
Too many things left unsaid or undone
None of it made any sense, why should he be
Of all of the possible people, the one
For whom luck would run out, who was chosen to die

I do not know whether I drifted to sleep
Or whether the vision that came to me then
Was something for real, but I do know the message
Was one to be told. I woke (was I sleeping?)
To write what I remembered in my mind’s eye:

A man stood beside, on the edge of my vision
But try as I might I could not turn my eyes
I squinted and strained, I could only just see him
I know he was tall, and was dressed all in white
Who are you? I asked, to the man standing by

“You know me,” he said, and the voice was familiar
A gentle voice, confident, strong and yet kind
“I’ve come to explain why I was called away
It may seem unfair, it was before my time
But I hope that you’ll come to see the reasons why”

“The big man upstairs, He told me His quandary
For reasons too complex to try to explain
The ranks of the angels fell short by a soul
Which could not be filled by the heavenly train
So He widened the search to the Earth from on high”

“And so I was picked, I’m one of their number
I’ve taken my place in the line of God’s own
Death cannot harm me, I have my protection
And marvellous are all the things I’ve been shown
I’ve plenty to learn and forever to try”

“Don’t worry about me, I’m here, right beside you
I’ll be watching out for you, all that you do
I’m sorry that you are not able to see me
I’m sorry about what this has put you through
I hope that you will understand, by and by”

On waking, I wondered, did it really happen?
I might doubt my dream, but know all the more
He was always there for me, now he always can be
A new guardian angel who loves us for sure
He’s watching and guiding from a place up on high.
