Sewing Machines

642 inhabitants of Oradour sur Glane were massacred on 10 June 1944, just 4 days after D-Day. Men were rounded up and shot, whilst women and children were herded into the church which was set ablaze. That night, the town was put to the torch.

The place is now a memorial, the broken buildings and twisted metal still caught in the moment of shock. Somehow the sewing machines, so many of them, seemed to capture some of the vibrancy that would have existed in what was, just 24 hours before, a thriving, well-to-do small town in the heart of the Limousin countryside.
